Original green cloth blocked in gilt with repeating scroll and flower decoration (extremities bumped and scuffed, lower-cover slightly affected by damp, lower joint split, hinges split). Provenance: George Frederic Watts (presentation inscription from the author 'To George F Watts from his friend D G Rossetti April 1870' to half-title); Ronald Chapman (signature to front pastedown); thence by descent. Note: this volume was gifted by G.F. Watts and his wife Mary to their ward, Lilian Mackintosh, who married Michael Chapman in 1906. Their son Ronald Chapman later wrote a biography on Watts titled 'The Laurel and the Thorn', 1p. of quotations at the rear of the book is presumably by him.
