A Chinese blue and white porcelain brush pot (bitong), mark of Chenghua but Kangxi period, of cylindrical form, finely painted with a continuous scene of poets and attendants indulging in scholarly pursuits, including a group seated at a table playing weiqu, others seated whilst one plays the lute, and another two figures and attendant watching a scholar writing on a rock, all within a fenced garden with banana plants, rocks and clouds, underglaze blue six character mark of Chenghua to base, height approx 15.1cm, diameter approx 17.9cm. Note: for a similarly decorated bitong see page 280-281 of Seventeenth Century Jingdezhen porcelain from the Shanghai Museum and the Butler Collections by Sir Michael Butler and Professor Wang Qingzheng, 2006.
