MATTHEWS, [Leonard] Harrison. South Georgia the British Empire's Subantarctic Outpost. Bristol & London: John Wright & Sons Ltd., and Simpkin Marshall Ltd., 1931. First edition, 8vo (235 x 157mm.) Map to verso of half-title, numerous uncoloured illustrations. (Browning and spotting.) Original cloth, upper-cover blocked in black, spine gilt (extremities lightly bumped, spine slightly faded). Spence 770. Together with three a.l.s. by Duncan Carse addressed to Dr Gilkes, two referencing the Undine South Harbour Project in 1961 where Carse embarked on an experiment of living alone in the South Georgian cove undertaking scientific research, however, resulted in a 116 day debacle and eventual rescue by a sealing ship on September 12th. - And a t.l.s. by Edward Shackleton to Michael Gilkes dated '21st November, 1983', referring to his lecture at the Scott Polar Research Institute and an offer of a copy of his 1982 report, likely on the economics of the Falkland Islands.
