DISCOVERY EXPEDITION. - George MURRAY (editor). The Antarctic Manual for the Use of the Expedition of 1901… with a preface by Sir Clements R. Markham… Presented to the Expedition. London: Royal Geographical Society, 1901. First edition, 8vo (222 x 144mm.) Illustrations, 3 folding maps in pocket at rear. (Some marginal browning, minor marginal tear with loss to p.365, some browning and light spotting to folding maps.) Original cloth blocked in blind, spine blocked in gilt (extremities bumped and lightly scuffed, spine darkened, endpapers browned, minor loss to front-free endpaper, tear to rear pastedown). Spence 829. Provenance: Robert H. Scott (signed 'Robert H. Scott' to title-page [Robert H. Scott was the Director of the Meteorological Office and researched Arctic and Antarctic climates]); James Cossar (inkstamp to front-free endpaper); The Michael Gilkes Collection (signed and dated '1945' to half-title). Note: Michael Gilkes purchased this book before embarking to serve with a whaling fleet in 1945.
