LOT 3355
A Victorian giltwood open armchair of Neoclassical Louis XVI design, the frame carved with entrelacs and foliage, the surmount with a tied ribbon and laurel leaves, the arched back and seat covered in Royal Windsor tapestry, the back bearing a crowned 'IIL' monogram flanked by two winged putti, the seat with a view of Windsor Castle within a border of roses, the front with the Windsor Manufactory seal, raised on stop fluted legs, the frame inscribed in pencil 'C. Bishop, 1882, Windsor' and bearing paper label of HRH the Duchess of Albany, height approx 103cm, width approx 64cm. Provenance: this chair was given as a wedding present to Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, Queen Victoria's youngest son, and his bride, Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont. They were married at Windsor on 27th April 1882 and lived at Claremont near Esher, where the Duchess of Albany died in 1922. The chair was sold on behalf of the Executors of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, by Christie's in 1981 and again in Dreweatt Neate's 18th and 19th century furniture sale on 25th September 1991, Lot 217.
