BINDINGS. - [Jean] de la FONTAINE. Contes e Nouvelles en Vers. Amsterdam: 1764. 2 vols., 8vo (185 x 107mm.) Engraved frontispiece to vol. I, title-pages with engraved vignettes, 82 engraved plates after Charles Eisen, numerous engraved illustrations. (Light browning and spotting, occasional minor soiling and offsetting, marginal tear to pp.247-248 in vol. II with minor loss.) Contemporary red morocco, the covers elaborately tooled in gilt and blind in a floral and geometric design, the spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (extremities lightly scuffed and rubbed, minor loss to leather on lower cover of vol. I, spines slightly faded). Provenance: Saxton Noble, Kent House, Knightsbridge (armorial bookplates to front pastedowns, ink inscription to front-free endpaper of vol. II).
