THEATRE. An archive of material relating to the costume designer Ivan Alderman (1910-2002), the majority papers, letters, photographs and newspaper cuttings, including a group of original artwork and prints by fellow costume designer Des Heeley, a copy of 'Confessions of an Actor' signed and dedicated to Ivan from Laurence Olivier, other correspondence signed by Olivier and a letter from Michael Stroud containing, inter alia, the story of Olivier's last words. Note: when Tyrone Guthrie founded the Shakespearean Festival at Stratford, Ontario in 1953, Alderman was invited every year to supervise the wardrobe. Laurence Olivier, a personal friend of Alderman's poached him from Stratford on launching the Chichester Festival in 1962. The partnership continued when Olivier was appointed director of the National Theatre.
