A Chinese Canton enamel famille rose decorated blue ground bowl/censer, probably Jiaqing period, of rounded square tapering form, the body painted with four uniform panels of lotus, leaves and scrolling tendrils on a dark blue ground, the rim and bracket feet with gilt key fret borders on a blue ground, height approx 8cm (chip to one panel and other minor faults), with later hardwood stand. Provenance: accompanied by a letter from Gump's of San Francisco discussing purchase and attribution of item, dated January 17, 1938 and bearing H.M. Customs and Excise, Plymouth stamp, dated '10 Feb 1938'.
