A Chinese Canton export ivory 'puzzleball' chess set, mid-19th Century, one side stained red, the other side left natural, depicting the Chinese versus the Mongols, with kings and queens as emperor and empress, bishops as mandarins, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants and pawns as horsemen, all raised on 'puzzleball' stems and carved foliate circular bases, height of king approx 18cm (some faults and losses).
