Chen Wen Hsi (1906-1992) - a Chinese watercolour painting depicting two gibbons hanging from blossoming branches, black painted signature and red seal to upper right corner, approx 33cm x 43cm, framed and glazed, offered with a Chen Wen Hsi catalogue. Provenance: purchased by the vendor approximately 35 years ago from the artist's studio at 19 Tanglin Road, Singapore. Note: Chen Wen Hsi is one of Singapore's most acclaimed artists and a pioneer of the Nanyang art movement. He was born in Guangdong, China, in 1906 and later studied art at the Shanghai College of Art and Sin Hwa Academy of Fine Art, Shanghai. He settled in Singapore in 1948, where he taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In 1964 he was awarded the Public Service Star for his contributions to the fine arts of Singapore.
