Photographed from Life by Lock and Whitfield. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1876, 1877, 1878, 1880, 1881. Volumes I-III, V and VI only (of 7), 4to (272 x 210mm.) 181 mounted 'woodburytype' plates. (Some spotting, about 25 images with cracks to the image surface.). Contemporary near-uniform half-calf (spines and extremities worn, two spine labels lacking). Note: the sitters include Edward, Prince of Wales, Richard Burton, J.E. Millais, Frederick Leighton, Victor Hugo, A.H. Layard, James Nasmyth, Jules Verne, Thomas Woolner, H. Schliemann, Gustave Doré, Anthony Trollope, George Nares, Sir F. McClintock, Charles Darwin, Disraeli, W. Harrison Ainsworth, Wilkie Collins, Robert Browning, L. Alma-Tadema, Gladstone and G.F. Watts.
