LOT 3014
FIRST WORLD WAR. - BILIBIN, Ivan Yakolovich (1876-1942). Skazka ob Ivane-Tsareviche, Zhar Ptitse, i o Serom Volke [The Tale of Tsarevich Ivan, The Fire-Bird and Grey Wolf]. St. Petersburg: published by Exped. Zagotovl. Gos. Bumag., 1901. Folio (33 x 25.5 cm.) 12 pp., chromolithographs throughout, some full-page. Original chromolithographed wrappers (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Major-General M. Brocas Burrows (1894-1967, inscription dated '8./XI 1915'); by descent. Note: a nice copy of an important work, with an interesting provenance: Lieutenant Burrows was captured by the Germans in early September 1914 and did not return to the UK until late 1918. He learnt Russian from his fellow prisoners of war, and subsequently served in Russia twice. The present work was, for him, a teaching aid. Bilibin's style and approach to book illustration was very influential in the history of Russian book design. Kilgour 1302f; Rats 4; Seslavinskiy Girlianda 191.
