LOT 1049
A George III mahogany stick barometer, the silvered arch dial with vernier scale and inscribed 'Nairne, London', the case with arched top and turned hemispherical cistern cover, height approx 91cm. Note: Edward Nairne was born in 1726 and apprenticed to the celebrated instrument maker Matthew Loft in 1741, and became free of The Spectacle Makers' Company in 1748 when Loft died. He worked from 20 Cornhill and was elected to the Royal Society in 1776. In 1774 he formed a partnership with his former apprentice Thomas Blunt which appears to have been dissolved in 1793 when Blunt was joined in business by his son.
