LOT 2759
An early 19th Century Sheffield plated armband badge of the Waterman's Company, numbered '6952' and inscribed 'Free Waterman at command of our Superiors', mounted on a later oak plaque with inscribed paper label to reverse, diameter of badge approx 12cm. Note: licensed Watermen worked on the Thames; they were issued with badges called 'brassards' by the Waterman's Company, which had to be worn, sewn onto a coat sleeve. The river was the quickest way to navigate central London in the early 1800s but it could be a risky and dangerous journey.
