LOT 1090
A Chinese Imari armorial porcelain octagonal dish, early 18th Century, the centre painted with a coat of arms beneath a banner inscribed 'Corbeau', between lobed reserve panels filled with cranes and prunus and a Buddhistic lion amongst peony, against a blue ground filled with flowerheads and scrolling tendrils, width approx 45cm (rim repairs). Note: the arms are those of the Corbeau family of France. In French the word corbeau means 'crow' and the arms of the French families Corbel of Brittany and Corbet of Normandy have three crows, although correctly on a white or gold ground. For a similar dish in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, see J. Ayers, O. Impey and J. Mallett, Porcelain for Palaces; The Fashion for Japan in Europe, page 237.
