LOT 3168
[(?) WISE, T.J., forger]. - Robert Louis STEVENSON. The Story of a Lie. London: Hayley & Jackson, '1882' [but probably later]. Probably a Wise forgery, but still a first separate printing, 8vo (194 x 128mm). (The last three leaves almost torn in half). Stitched, but lacking original paper wrappers, contained within a later green morocco two-part pull-off slipcase. Note: "The Story of a Lie was prepared for issue in 1882, but, in consequence of a dispute which arose with the proposed publishers upon the question of copyright, the project was abandoned, and the book withdrawn before publication. The work was never 'made up' for issue, and the few copies that have survived are merely such sets of the sheets as chanced to have been preserved by the publishers and printers." [Prideaux, 6]. Provenance: The Library Collection of the Late W. Leslie Weller MBE, DL, FSA.
