LOT 1132
A 19th Century brass noctuary or nightwatchman's four pillar clock movement, the dial inscribed 'Whitehurst & Son, Derby' and 'No. 494', framed by a silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals, height approx 15cm, with pendulum (faults). Note: John Whitehurst III (1788-1855) was the third generation of the family to make clocks in Derby; he was apprenticed to his father in 1809 and was thereafter in partnership with him until his father's death in 1834. Whitehurst & Son of Derby was one of only three clockmakers invited to tender for the Westminster clock in 1846.
