An English porcelain rectangular plaque, circa 1860, painted by George Gray after an original painting titled 'The Last In' by William Mulready, depicting a schoolroom scene of children and a schoolmaster, mockingly doffing his hat and bowing to a frightened latecomer, signed, approx 23cm x 31.5cm, within a giltwood and gesso frame. Provenance: this plaque was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1860, No. 813. Note: George Gray is listed as a decorator and portrait painter in The Dictionary of Minton by Atterbury and M. Batkin. He exhibited numerous works at The Royal Academy. The original painting by William Mulready (1786-1863) was painted in 1834-5 and exhibited in 1835, and is now part of the Tate Collection.
