A mid-20th Century African carved hardwood dispatch box, the hinge lid and sides carved in relief with fruiting vines, within foliate borders, the interior painted with a cream and black foliate design on a red ground, the underside inscribed 'Made in P.M Mengo K.M Buganda', length approx 50.5cm. Provenance: this box is a copy of the dispatch box from the Bugandan Parliament and was presented to Dr. John Phimister Mitchell by the Kabaka of Buganda upon his retirement in 1945 from his role as Medical Superintendent at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda.
