A Chinese red silk robe, late 19th/early 20th Century, worked in gilt thread with ten dragon roundels amongst shou characters, bats, Buddhistic emblems and vapours, above crashing waves and rocks, length approx 153cm (some faults). Provenance: the property of a descendant of Doctor Duncan Main. Doctor Duncan Main was a Scottish medical missionary who lived and worked in Hangzhou from 1881 to 1926. He and his wife, Florence, are credited with the establishment of at least thirty medical and welfare institutions in Hangzhou by the time they left in 1926.
