A Chinese blue silk embroidered jacket, late 19th/early 20th Century, worked in coloured and gilt threads with bats, butterflies and birds flying amongst peaches, gourds and flowers, the black borders fitted with gilt metal fastenings, length approx 74cm (minor faults). Provenance: the property of a descendant of Doctor Duncan Main. Doctor Duncan Main was a Scottish medical missionary who lived and worked in Hangzhou from 1881 to 1926. He and his wife, Florence, are credited with the establishment of at least thirty medical and welfare institutions in Hangzhou by the time they left in 1926.
