An exceptional Chinese Canton export ware brisé fan, mid-19th Century, the ivory guards carved in high relief with figures in ornamental gardens above dense flowers, the fourteen sticks similarly pierced and carved in low relief, the paper panel painted to one side with exotic birds and butterflies in a profuse ground of predominantly pink flowers again a gold ground, the other side with a superb military scene of gunners, infantry, swordsmen and cavalry drawn up before a fortified cliff, the garments worked in multicoloured collage and finely painted faces, length approx 30cm, the gilt metal mount with cord suspending a carved and pierced ivory figural bead and tasselled terminal, together with a lacquer fitted case with similarly decorated hinge lid interior.
